Speaking at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit in Washington on Tuesday, Steve Daines said that he carries his phone with him when travelling to India but leaves it behind in Washington, DC when visiting Beijing. The remark was made while he was addressing participants at the summit, where he was also reportedly presented with the USISPF Public Service Award for his contributions to strengthening bilateral relations.
Daines said India, in partnership with the United States, represents a uniquely positioned force capable of matching the scale and scope of China’s innovation ecosystem. He described the India-United States relationship as essential not only for both democracies but also for the broader global order.
He further stated that India is the only country in the world that can match the size and scale of China’s innovation network when working in coordination with the United States, arguing that such a partnership is necessary to build global competitive capacity.
The Senator, who has travelled extensively across Asia, emphasized that personal engagement and direct diplomacy remain critical to shaping effective foreign policy. He noted that mutual trust forms the foundation of the India-United States relationship and is central to long-term strategic cooperation.
Daines also addressed Washington’s approach toward China, stating that while the United States cannot fully disengage from China, it must pursue a strategy of reducing risk exposure while simultaneously strengthening reliable international partnerships. He added that policy discussions in Washington often highlight the challenge posed by China, but fall short of defining clear strategic alliances required to address it.
